A camper mattress is often placed over a solid platform, which limits airflow beneath it. When the outside wall is cold, moisture from breathing and cooking collects at the point where the mattress meets the wall and the platform. Over time this can become mildew spotting on the underside of the mattress or the fabric behind it. The top of the mattress may look perfectly clean while the underside smells.
Dinette cushions have a similar problem. They sit close to windows and are often covered in vinyl or fabric that holds condensation. Compression in storage can trap moisture and fold lines can darken.
Lift-and-look check
Do this with good light and a nose close to the surface.
- Lift the mattress along the wall edge and look for dark spots on the underside and platform.
- Smell the foam through any zipper or seam opening.
- Check the platform for damp patches, warping or a cold feeling.
- Look at the wall paneling behind the head of the bed for stains.
- Pull dinette cushions out and inspect the back and seam fabric.
- Look at curtains and window tracks for moisture and spotting.
A drying approach over a few days
- Day one
- Remove cushions and mattress, stand them in sun and wind if weather allows.
- Day one and two
- Wipe the platform and wall with a mild cleaner and let it dry fully.
- Day two
- Run a fan and, if available, a dehumidifier in the closed RV.
- Day three
- Reassess the smell. If foam still smells earthy, consider whether it can be cleaned or should be replaced.
- Ongoing
- Raise the mattress on a slatted or vented base to keep air moving.
Questions to decide whether to keep a cushion
- Does the smell remain after drying outside in sun?
- Is there visible mold spotting inside the foam?
- Is the foam crumbling or discolored?
- Would replacement cost more than the cleaning effort and time?
- Is the cause fixed, such as a leak or condensation pattern?
Common questions
Can sunlight kill the smell?
Sun and airflow help dry material and can reduce mild smells, but they will not clean deep mold in foam.
Are mattress covers worth it?
A breathable cover can protect fabric, but a waterproof cover can trap moisture if the bed stays pressed against a wet wall.
