Sellers sometimes air out a rig or add a scent before a showing. A calm inspection with specific steps usually reveals what a casual walk-through misses. Ask to see the RV closed up for at least a short time, ideally on a warm day, and bring a flashlight, a small mirror and a friend with a fresh nose.
None of these checks replaces a full inspection by a qualified RV inspector. They are the odor-specific part that buyers often skip.
Plan the visit for a warm, dry day if you can. Heat brings out smell from fabric and foam, and dry weather lets you tell the difference between leak-driven dampness and ordinary mustiness. Bring a notepad and a phone for photos, and take your time in each space instead of rushing through. A seller who is comfortable with the rig will not mind an unhurried look, and one who hurries you through a closed-up unit may be hoping the smell goes unnoticed.
Closed-up sniff test
- Ask to see the RV with windows closed for ten minutes before you enter.
- Smell the first breath at the door, before your nose adapts.
- Smell cabinets, closets and the bed base.
- Smell the bathroom and sink drains.
- Smell the vents with the fan on.
- Note any heavy air freshener scent, which may be covering something.
Questions for the seller
- Has anyone smoked or vaped in the RV?
- Has it had any leaks, and were they repaired?
- Where was it stored, and for how long?
- Have mice or other animals been found in it?
- Was it winterized each year, and how?
- Has the roof or slide seals been replaced or resealed?
- Can I see the maintenance and repair records?

Common questions
Can an odor problem be hidden?
Yes, temporarily. Scent products, a freshly cleaned interior and open windows can all mask smells during a short visit.
Should I walk away from smoke smell?
It depends on your tolerance and budget. Smoke in porous material can be costly to remove.
