Start here with the item in hand

Answer each row honestly, then see the sections below for detail.

  • IfSmell is faint and surface onlyThenCleaning is a reasonable first step. Wash or extract, dry fully, and recheck.
  • IfSmell remains after deep cleaning and dryingThenConsider the cause. If smoke or mildew penetrated foam, replacement may be the simpler route.
  • IfVisible mold in the foam or backingThenReplace in most cases. Mold in foam is hard to remove.
  • IfFoam is crumbling, stained or flattenedThenReplace. Odor work will not restore the material.
  • IfItem is custom-sized or hard to findThenTry cleaning first, then weigh cost of replacement.
  • IfSmell is only on removable coversThenLaunder the covers and recheck the foam.

Cleaning versus replacing

Cleaning tends to make sense when

  • Smell is on the surface
  • Fabric is washable or extractable
  • Cause has been fixed
  • Item is in good shape otherwise

Replacing tends to make sense when

  • Mold is inside foam or padding
  • Smell returns after thorough cleaning
  • Material is degraded
  • Replacement is cheap or easy

Before you decide

  • Fix the source such as a leak or smoke before cleaning anything.
  • Dry the item fully in air and sun if possible.
  • Smell it again the next day on a warm morning.
  • Take photos so you can compare before and after.
  • Check whether covers come off and can be washed separately.
  • Ask a provider what is realistic for this material, not what is theoretically possible.

The key is separating the smell from the material. Odor molecules sit in fibers and in the tiny cells of foam. Surface cleaning reaches the top layer. Extraction reaches a bit deeper. Neither reaches the center of a thick cushion if the smell has soaked all the way through. That is why the same cleaning can work on a lightly affected seat and fail on a mattress that sat in damp air for a season.

Weigh the time and effort as well. A heavy cushion that needs several cleaning rounds, multiple days of drying and still might smell can cost more in effort than a replacement. On the other hand, a custom curved mattress or an unusual size may take weeks to source. Think about how often you use the RV and how much a persistent smell bothers you.

If more than one item is affected, make a list and rank them by smell strength. Treating the worst offender first often shows whether the whole interior needs attention or only a few pieces.

Common questions

Can foam be cleaned inside?

Some surface and shallow smell can be reduced, but deep penetration is difficult to reverse.

Is carpet different?

Carpet can often be cleaned thoroughly, but the pad and subfloor beneath may hold smell if they were wet.
